REALE SEGUROS becomes the first insurance company in the world to compensate for the plastic footprint of its employees by financing the cleaning of 3.110 kilos of plastic from the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea in July #JulyPlasticFree.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN THAT REALE INSURANCE COMPENSATES THE PLASTIC FOOTPRINT OF ITS EMPLOYEES?

Each person in Spain generates an average of 30 kilos of single-use plastic yearly (the world average is 50 kilos, and in the United States, it rises to 84 kilos per person).

Knowing the plastic footprint of each worker in a company allows us to produce compensatory actions and thus convert workers into PLASTIC NEUTRAL or plastic neutral. This means that the same amount of plastic is cleaned from the Mediterranean Sea as these workers generate in a year.

In this way, REALE SEGUROS has compensated for the plastic footprint of more than 100 workers in 2021.

New generations are looking to work in socially engaged companies, in particularmillennials, who will represent75% of the workforce by 2025. In fact, a 2016 study by Cone Communications Millennial Employee Engagement Study, states (among other things) that:

  • Three-quarters (76%) of Millennials consider a company’s social and environmental commitments when deciding where to work, and almost two-thirds (64%)
  • They will not take a job if a potential employer does not have a strong corporate social responsibility.

The fact that companies like REALE SEGUROS are involved in this type of environmental initiative, and on top of that, by providing this value to their workers, is a clear example of the path that companies have to follow.

Climate change has become one of the most important social concerns in society today, and integrating sustainability strategies into the business model of companies is indispensable.

But we cannot discuss climate change without considering the seas and oceans. We can not even talk about greenhouse gases and offsetting the carbon footprint as 50-80% of the oxygen generated on the planet comes from the oceans, and they are also responsible for absorbing +30% of the world’s CO2.

Therefore, this strategic incorporation of the Plastic Free Oceans commitment by REALE SEGUROS is something that undoubtedly makes them a benchmark in their sector.

Among other things, plastic in the sea contributes to the acidification of the sea, which has already absorbed +80% of the temperature generated since the industrial revolution and it must be borne in mind that in the process of plastic degradation, they emit gases such as CO2 or methane (3 times worse) that change the pH of the water. Without healthy seas, the planet would not be habitable, but unfortunately, we have turned them into the dumping ground of the planet. We dump more than 8 million tons of plastic into them every year and the consequences can no longer be denied.

From shocking images of rubbish islands to the more than 1,000,000 marine animals which die each year as a direct result of plastic.

At Gravity Wave, we know that alone we cannot achieve our goal of cleaning every last kilo of plastic from the sea. We are aware that the only way to achieve the impact we want is through partnerships with companies and organisations that share our purpose and vision.

The fact that leading companies such as REALE SEGUROS are joining the commitment for plastic-free seas is a big step in cleaning and protecting our seas and oceans.

With this initiative, REALE SEGUROS becomes a pioneer in its sector. Now thanks to Reale, over 100 people have a positive plastic footprint on the planet, meaning during 2021, they have cleaned more plastic from the sea than they have consumed.

How does Gravity Wave “fish” for plastic?

Thanks to the network of traditional fishermen of our partners ENALEIA, we have more than 1,000 fishermen all over the Mediterranean Sea, from Greece to Egypt, passing through Italy, Spain, etc., who every day go out to fish, collect plastic waste from the bottom of the sea are being paid for every kilo of plastic they extract.

Our vision is that in the long term, there will be professional plastic fishermen and that instead of catching fish and damaging the marine ecosystem, there will be an army of fishermen who catch the rubbish that pollutes the waters and regenerate the ecosystem.

By compensating them economically, we get more and more fishermen involved in the cleaning of marine plastic, and this new type of economy is promoted, and thanks to companies like REALE SEGUROS all this is possible.

Furthermore, all the plastic that we clean from the sea, we revalue it by transforming it into products, symbols of the fight against plastic in the sea, as we do not want to pass the problem from the sea to the land.

This is only the first step in the insurance industry, but there are many avenues we want to explore, such as the creation of the first #PlasticFree insurance for the customers themselves.

REALE SEGUROS has already done it, and you, are you going to ride the wave?
