Sprinter and Nike facing the challenge of plastic pollution
Every year, between 19 and 21 million tons of plastic end up in the oceans, causing irreparable damage to marine ecosystems. This waste threatens biodiversity and the health of our seas, making it urgent to take action. Sprinter and Nike, aware of this global issue, decided to join forces with Gravity Wave to collaborate on the Plastic Free Oceans mission.
Solution
Driving the circular economy to support ocean recovery
To tackle the challenge, Sprinter, Nike and Gravity Wave launched the project “Best Waves of Sport”, an initiative that combines sustainability with sports. Through this project, not only was plastic removed from the Mediterranean Sea, but it was also transformed into useful and valuable products, promoting the circular economy. From November 2023 to February 2024, with the support of over 7,000 traditional fishermen across 150 Mediterranean ports, 43,000 kg of plastic were collected. This plastic was recycled and reused to create communication materials in Sprinter and Nike stores, such as displays and signage, raising customer awareness about the importance of reducing plastic pollution.

The collaboration between Sprinter, Nike, and Gravity Wave generated a significant impact:
- Reduction of plastic pollution: 43,000 kg of plastic were collected, directly contributing to the cleanup of the Mediterranean Sea and improving the health of its ecosystems.
- Circular Economy: The recycled plastic was transformed into useful products, such as displays and signage, reducing the need for new plastics and promoting a more sustainable model within the industry.
- Awareness and action: The project inspired companies and individuals to get involved in the fight against plastic pollution, proving that small actions can lead to big changes. The collaboration with Sprinter and Nike has raised awareness about the importance of taking action in the face of the environmental crisis.
