Every kilo we remove from the Mediterranean has a name, a time and a place.

Environmental impact has always been communicated as a final figure. We have built what lies behind it: a digital record that tracks plastic, nets and ropes from the exact point where they are collected, at sea and in ports.

The starting point

A number is not proof.

A company funds the removal of 10,000 kg of plastic from the Mediterranean and, months later, receives a report with a figure. Where did it come from? Which port, on what day, who weighed it and where did the material end up?

That information exists, but it is scattered among fishers, transport companies, processing facilities and spreadsheets. Reconstructing it afterwards is slow and difficult to substantiate.

We no longer reconstruct the story at the end. It now writes itself as we work.

This is not a record organised by campaign or mission: every collection across the network enters the same history, no matter how much it contributes.

How it works

Plastic traceability, step by step.

We do not track companies or departments: we track the material. Every time it moves, is weighed or changes hands, it is recorded in its own history.

Captured where it happens

The collector records the collection at the port itself, using a mobile phone: photograph, GPS location, weight and operator. Before anything is moved.

It becomes a material event

Each capture becomes a record with its own unique identifier, date, time and weight. It is not edited afterwards: it is added to the history.

Tracked along the route

The material is grouped into a route to the processing facility. Origin, destination, distance and transit time all form part of the same history.

Accepted and weighed at destination

The facility confirms the arrival and the weight received. Comparing what was collected with what was delivered turns a data point into a verified delivery.

Assigned to the project that funded it

The kilograms are linked to the programme that made the collection possible. The impact report is no longer written from scratch: it is generated from the record.

Four days at the Port of Calpe, eleven material events and a target of 10,000 kg exceeded. We use it as an example because it is easy to understand at a glance, but this is how every collection across the network is recorded: at any port, on any Tuesday.

What traceability does — and what it does not.

Technology strengthens transparency, but the quality of the result still depends on the work and evidence behind it. We prefer to make that clear before anyone has to ask.

What it does

  • Record what happens to the material: where, when, at what weight and with what evidence.
  • Connect collections, routes, ports, waste managers and facilities in a single history.
  • Preserve the evidence for each event instead of scattering it across different systems.
  • Enable a report to be generated from the record, not from a spreadsheet.

What it cannot do on its own

  • It does not automatically guarantee that all the information entered is correct.
  • It does not verify environmental impact on its own: it documents it.
  • It does not replace auditors or certification bodies.
  • It does not capture every event automatically: someone records the real work.
The technology behind it

A system designed around the material, not around companies.

We developed our traceability model with Jörð.tech. Instead of asking each organisation to report what it has done, the system starts with the material and records what happens to it throughout collection, transport, treatment and allocation. A digital logbook for the material.
